Statement from Integrity First PAC on Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s announcement to not run for reelection in 2018.
SALT LAKE CITY — This is a good day for the state of Utah and the people of the Third Congressional District.
Since his first day in Congress, Jason Chaffetz has made his position and rise through the Republican ranks of power all about himself while leaving the concerns and needs of his constituents behind.
From his constant need to be in front of a TV camera to his zealous pursuit of a scandal about Benghazi that turned up nothing, Chaffetz has been nothing more than a self-promoter and a blind follower of his party.
This year we have seen the backlash of his inaction to hold his own party accountable. His first—and only—town hall of the year was filled with constituents who demanded he do his job. His response was to call them “paid protestors” and refer to the demands to investigate President Trump as “silly season.”
Now with multiple PACs forming against him, both at home and in Washington DC, and with constituents organizing their efforts to unseat him, Chaffetz is seeing the writing on the wall for his prospects in 2018, and it is was not looking good.
Utah deserves better than Jason Chaffetz, and now in 2018 voters will have a fresh opportunity to elect a new representative to Congress.
We will work hard to ensure that the person elected is a responsible leader and one who will put their integrity and their constituents first.
